Built on Eel Pie Island on the Thames, this is one of many successful Sandmartin banks that Lloyd has built. The artificial structure, built from rendered blockwork has to withstand a wide range of tide heights and is positioned to minimise predation.

An artificial Sandmartin bank, designed as part of an Arts Council project on the edge of the docks in Bristol. We believe this is the first one to utilise a disused shipping container and was painted to blend in to its surroundings.

Lloyd was commissioned to renovate this old stone barn as suitable habitat for a Brown Long-eared Bat maternity roost which was a great success, achieving it’s aim within the first year.

The face of these artificial Sandmartin banks is sculpted from concrete and coloured to resemble sand encouraging the birds to investigate. The wardens are also playing recordings of their call to draw them in.
