BECKTON CREEKSIDE NATURE RESERVE GATEWAY

Sculpted from metal, this gateway features Reedmace plants. The metal has been sandblasted and aged with different effects to create a variety of colours and textures. The letters on the title piece are both 3D and cut out to allow light through.

SEATON JURASSIC DISCOVERY POINTS
Client: East Devon District Council and Devon Wildlife Trust
To complete the survival challenge and get all the stamps in the passport, there are a series of discovery points to visit, each of which has a large public art sculpture and an interpretation pillar which we have designed and built. These work in a number of ways in that they also act as a meeting point for activities led by Seaton Jurassic staff and as an advert for visitors to Seaton.

‘The Prow’ is a seating area in the shape of the bows of a fishing boat looking out over the harbour entrance in Seaton. Constructed from Green Oak with natural netting beneath the rails, this is a great lookout position on the Jurassic Coast. It marks the start of the Undercliffs trail.

SEATON JURASSIC DISCOVERY POINTS

This sculpture named ‘The Portal’ can be found above Seaton Hole Rockpools and represents the idea that rockpool species found today would have existed 300 million years ago! We commissioned a model of a rockpool set in clear resin to be the centre piece of this sculpture and were amazed at the quality and level of detail that Christine Williams (Wills models) managed to achieve. We highly recommend her.

‘The Stargazer’ marks the start of the Seaton Wetlands trail. Inspired by the migration of Sandmartins that use the sun and stars to navigate, I designed this meeting point as a sundial seating area, each seat carved from a tree trunk set at an angle so that they can be used for enjoying the sun or watching stars at night. The gnomon is carved from green oak in the shape of the wing of a Sandmartin. The bench seats between are marked to act as a sundial.

‘The Waves’ marks the entrance to Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast. Inspired by the action of longshore drift and knowledge that the waves are partly shaped by the sea bed, I designed these 3m high stainless steel waves to create a gateway to the Jurassic Coast.

Install of ‘The Waves’. This project was perfect for bringing together my creativity and Lloyd’s engineering skills. We had to be sure that they would stand up to the forces of wind and waves whilst not being detrimental to the sea wall.
